Research confirms that Saw Palmetto works by altering levels of the various hormones (possibly including a form of testosterone) that cause prostate cells to multiply excessively thereby causing the prostate to swell. The herb may also have an anti-inflammatory action and may boost the immune system’s ability to kill bacteria - properties both useful for the treatment of urinary tract and prostate infections.
Named after its saw-toothed stems, Saw Palmetto is a small palm tree that grows wild in southern USA. It has a lifespan of 700 years and a long history of use to match: Originally used by Native Americans to treat urinary tract disorders, today Saw Palmetto is used mainly to relieve the symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate gland.
